The Start of Something New

A short explanation of the purpose of this blog

Dec 5th, 2024

Welcome to the beginning of what is a massive experiment for me.

The idea for this blog specifically came from writing what ended up being an essay as a writing sample for my application for the Botchford Project with the Canucks. It was based around women’s hockey history, more specifically some of the highs of women’s hockey in the early years of the sport on a mostly local (BC) level, with one exception, and very briefly touched on the parallels between the highs and lows of the sport and the fight for women’s rights and equality. I realized part of the way through writing that piece that was so much more that could be said about that topic beyond a three page sample, but just making a few videos talking about it and posting them on social media like I’ve done before was not going to be enough.

This subject deserves more.

So I decided that regardless whether the application is accepted or not, I’d start this blog to talk at further length about not only women’s hockey, but the history of the sport as a whole. There have been a lot of other things I’ve wanted to cover in the short form content I’ve made, but some of the stories I’ve wanted to tell can’t easily be summed up in three minutes or less. That’s where this blog comes in to play. With this, I’m hoping to go more in depth into topics like player safety, personal profiles/biographies, and key moments in hockey history, as well as branching out into current events within the NHL and PWHL. I’ll still post short form videos on Tiktok and Instagram as well, as a companion to this site. Who knows, I might even branch out further than that down the road. But to start, I’ll share a longer version of the writing sample I submitted in the coming days.

For now though, thank you for coming. There will probably be a ton of learning curves to navigate, but no matter what, I will do my best to bring you a platform for learning, discussion, and in all honesty, a place where we can all fully nerd out.
